Design Trends 2021 - Our Top 5 Favorites
As we continue spending more time at home, not only is our comfort more important, but the functionality and beauty of our homes play a huge role in our mental and emotional well being. It’s no wonder that there is so much buzz this year about the new design trends. We’re not typically the type to put too much thought into analyzing trends and we usually don’t design with a focus on a particular trend unless we’re specifically requested to do so, so if an element works, it works, regardless of whether or not it’s trending. Hopefully that makes sense because if shiplap is a great look for a beachy room, we’re still going to incorporate it even if some say it’s “out”. So here we go, of the 2021 design trends, here are our top 5 favorites:
DISTANT SHORES Of course this is our favorite. Who doesn’t love going on vacation to a beautiful beachfront resort and enjoying turquoise water, palm trees, delicate trade winds, and mai tais at sunset. We loved the endless summers we experienced living in Hawaii and Costa Rica and love incorporating the easy going elements of this lifestyle into our designs. Bring this trend home in bamboo and rattan furnishings, tropical toned colors, and palm fronds plucked from your garden in glass vases.
GLOBAL INFLUENCE Right up there with Distant Shores, Global Influence is a do. We love to travel to exotic places, shopping flea markets and street fairs along the way to collect all kinds of unique objects and colorful, patterned textiles. It’s a small thing, but one of our close friends visited Australia and brought us back a rare wooden spoon decorated with Aboriginal art painted in white. It’s so cool. So whatever you have, get on board with this trend by looking for interesting ways to display your treasures.
GRANNY CHIC Again, this goes hand in hand with the above. Mixing old with new. The challenge of incorporating clients’ special things, perhaps heirlooms, into new designs is what really adds character and makes a home uncommon and exceptional.
CARPET Yes, we all love our wood floors and we’re definitely huge fans of stone tile, but you can’t beat the cozy feel of padded carpet, especially on those chilly winter mornings. Our flooring supplier says that for many it has to do with feelings associated with being at grandma’s house which is interesting since in all of our guest bedrooms we have designed in the homes we’ve built, our parents requested to have carpet floors because it’s “soft on the old bones”. We didn’t always like having to acquiesce to their wishes for the little amount of time they actually used the rooms, but now that we’re starting to experience some of our own aches and pains, we have to admit that carpet does feel nice underfoot. It’s also affordable when compared to some other flooring options, but again, it depends on the space.
HOUSEPLANTS Live plants not only add color and vibrancy, they also freshen the air, add calm and clarity to a space, and many find caring for them to be therapeutic.
